"Everything was excellent, they really take the time to look for the whales, we dived about 5 times to see them more, some managed to see them in the water. Anyway, we saw several from the boat, it was amazing. I really recommend it, a small group of 12 people, lots of explanations, perfect"

How a Gold Coast Whale Swim Works
Four steps, from checking you qualify to what happens when a humpback decides to come over.
Check That You Qualify
The listing asks for three things: you can swim unassisted, you have snorkelled before, and you are at least 15. Under-18s come with an adult. It is not suitable during pregnancy or with back problems, and Cooly's own booking page asks for a 50-metre unassisted swim.
Pick a Date in the Season
Humpbacks pass the Gold Coast from about late May to November, northbound until August and southbound with calves after that. When we checked in October 2026 the swim's first open date was 5 June 2027, while two whale-watching cruises still had dates that week.
Brief, Then Head Out
Check in at 139-151 Chinderah Bay Dr on the Tweed River for a 30-minute safety briefing. The boat runs out to the ocean and spends about 3 hours searching off the coast, with commentary on the whales and the area.
Let the Whale Decide
Queensland's rules say a person in the water must not approach within 100 metres of a whale, so swimmers slip in at a distance and wait. Cooly's description puts it plainly: you don't swim with the whales, the whales swim with you. Some trips end with a sighting from the boat and no swim.

Swim With Humpback Whales Off the Gold Coast
How the Gold Coast Whale Swim Works
Where the boat leaves, what the rules allow in the water, who can go, when the whales are here, and the cruises to book if you would rather watch from the deck.
Only one whale swim on the Gold Coast is bookable on GetYourGuide, and it doesn’t start on the Gold Coast at all. Cooly Eco Adventures’ boat leaves Chinderah, on the Tweed River just over the New South Wales border, and runs out to sea for about three hours of searching off the coast. When a humpback is close and calm, swimmers slip into the water beside an in-water guide and wait to see what the whale does.
The tour this site recommends is that swim: 4 hours with a skipper, crew and in-water guide, rated 4.8 from 14 reviews and from US$313 per person when we checked in October 2026. The listing is plain about the bargain you are making. “Remember, you don’t swim with the whales, the whales swim with you,” it says, and “get as close as 30 meters to the whales, however the rest will be up to the whales.”

Where it leaves from, and where you swim
Check-in is at 139-151 Chinderah Bay Dr, a few minutes inland from Kingscliff, and the trip opens with a 30-minute safety briefing. The boat then heads down the Tweed and out through the river mouth, about a quarter of an hour of scenery before the ocean, and spends roughly three hours on the water off the southern Gold Coast. One practical trap: the listing gives times in Queensland time, which is an hour behind New South Wales during daylight saving. Chinderah sits on the New South Wales side, so a phone set to local time can show the wrong hour from October.

The whale-watching cruises leave from two other places. Kokomo Cruises and Sea World Whale Watch board at Main Beach, near Sea World at the northern end of the coast, and Blue Seafaris leaves from Minjungbal Drive in Tweed Heads. If you are staying in Surfers Paradise, Main Beach is the short trip; from Coolangatta or Kingscliff, Chinderah and Tweed Heads are closer.
The rules in the water
Swimming with whales sounds like getting close to them. The law says the opposite. Queensland’s rules for watching marine mammals say a person in or entering the water must not approach within 100 metres of a whale, the same distance a boat must keep. In New South Wales, swimmers may not enter the water within 100 metres of a whale and must keep at least 30 metres away once they are in. A swim works because the boat stops well back, the swimmers get in quietly, and a curious humpback sometimes closes the gap itself.
That is why the outcome is never certain. Cooly’s own booking page says it guarantees whale sightings but cannot guarantee the swim, “the time they spend with us or the proximity they will come.” One reviewer in October 2025 described the crew taking the time to find whales, the group going in about five times, and some swimmers seeing them underwater while everyone saw several from the boat. Is it safe to swim with whales? covers the rules and the debate about the practice.
Who can go, and what you need
The listing asks for three things: you can swim unassisted, you have snorkelled before, and you are at least 15, with under-18s accompanied by an adult. Cooly’s own booking page sets the swimming bar at 50 metres unassisted. It is not suitable during pregnancy or for anyone with back problems, and non-swimmers cannot join. Bring swimwear, a towel, warm clothing, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and water. Cooly’s booking page lists masks, fins, snorkels and wetsuits as part of the trip, which matters because the sea off the Gold Coast is about 19 to 22°C in winter, cool enough that a wetsuit earns its place.
The groups are small. The GetYourGuide listing gives the limit as 8 participants in one place and “no more than 12 passengers” in another, and Cooly’s own page says at most 10 swimmers go in with the guide. Ask when you book if the number matters to you. What to bring covers seasickness, layers and the camera question.
When the whales are here
Humpbacks pass the Gold Coast from about late May to November. The northbound migration builds through June and peaks around July and August; from September the whales head south again, and mothers with young calves rest in the calmer water close to the coast. Sea World Whale Watch says it sails from late May until early November.
The swim’s own calendar runs on its own timetable. On 21 October 2026, the swim’s first open date was 5 June 2027, and Cooly’s whale-watching trip showed nothing before 1 June. Sea World Whale Watch and Blue Seafaris still had cruises that same week. So for a swim, book early in the season and pick a flexible day, because sea conditions decide whether a trip runs. The best time to swim with whales goes month by month.
If you would rather stay dry
A swim costs about four times a whale-watching cruise and asks a lot of you in open water. If seeing the whales is the goal, the cruises do that well, and each has a stated plan for a day without whales.

Price, cancellation and what is not included
The swim is from US$313 per person on GetYourGuide. The booking covers the skipper and crew, the in-water guide and commentary on the whales, other wildlife and the area’s Aboriginal and European history. Food, drinks, hotel transfers and the video highlight package are extra. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the start, and a cancellation for force majeure always gets a full refund. What a whale swim costs compares it with the cruises and the swims further north.
Further north: the Sunshine Coast and Hervey Bay
Queensland’s whale swims began further up the coast. Sunreef in Mooloolaba launched what it called Australia’s first swim-with-humpbacks trips in July 2014, and swims in Hervey Bay began the same year and became a permanent activity there in 2017. Hervey Bay’s water, sheltered by K’gari, is usually calmer than the open coast. Tasman Venture’s 9-hour day from Hervey Bay, rated 4.9 from 529 reviews, includes an optional whale immersion when conditions allow. Where to swim with whales in Australia compares the Gold Coast with Mooloolaba, Hervey Bay and Ningaloo in Western Australia.

Swimming With Whales on the Gold Coast: FAQ
What people ask before booking a whale swim, answered in the first sentence. Prices and dates checked in October 2026.
Yes, on a guided tour during the humpback season, roughly June to November. The one Gold Coast swim on GetYourGuide is Cooly Eco Adventures' 4-hour trip from Chinderah on the Tweed River, from US$313 per person and rated 4.8 from 14 reviews when we checked in October 2026. Sea The Gold Coast also runs swims from Southport. No operator can promise the swim itself: Cooly says it guarantees a sighting, but the whale decides whether to come close. See dates for the Chinderah swim
On the Gold Coast, from US$313 per person for Cooly Eco Adventures' 4-hour swim, as GetYourGuide showed it in October 2026. That includes the skipper and crew, an experienced in-water guide and commentary; food, drinks, hotel transfers and the video highlight package are extra. Cooly's own booking page lists masks, fins, snorkels and wetsuits as provided. A whale-watching cruise without the swim costs far less, from US$62 on Sea World Whale Watch's boat. What a whale swim costs
On a guided tour, with an in-water guide beside you, the main risks are the ocean itself, not the whales: swell, current, cold and seasickness. Humpbacks grow to about 16 metres and 30 to 45 tonnes, so the rules keep people back: in Queensland a person in the water must not approach within 100 metres of a whale. Cooly asks every swimmer to swim unassisted, have snorkelled before and be at least 15, and the swim is not suitable during pregnancy or with back problems. Is it safe to swim with whales?
Stay calm and still, and let it pass: never swim towards it, chase it or try to touch it. New South Wales guidance says that if a whale comes within 30 metres of you in the water, you should move slowly so you do not startle it, and must not touch it or move towards it. On a guided swim the in-water guide tells you when to stay put and when to return to the boat. Sudden splashing and duck-diving tend to send a whale deeper. The rules in the water
July and August for the most whales heading north, and September to October for mothers with calves heading south. The humpback season off the Gold Coast runs from about late May to November. Sea World Whale Watch says it sails from late May until early November, and its combination ticket says late May to the end of October. For the swim, check the live calendar early: in October 2026 Cooly's next open date was 5 June 2027. Best time to swim with whales
From a boat on the migration route a few kilometres offshore, which the operators reach from Main Beach, Tweed Heads or Chinderah. Kokomo Cruises says the route lies about 20 minutes from its marina, and Sea World Whale Watch calls itself the closest Gold Coast operator to the Humpback Highway. From land, headlands give the best view of blows and breaches, but a boat puts you at eye level. Cooly Eco Adventures' safari-style boat sits low on the water. Swim or watch?
From about late May to November, yes; outside those months the humpbacks are in Antarctic waters or the far north. The northbound migration peaks around July and August and the southbound one, with calves, runs from September into November. The listings are the practical check: in late October 2026 Sea World Whale Watch and Blue Seafaris still had cruises that week, while Kokomo and both Cooly Eco tours showed nothing before late May or June 2027. The season, month by month
Queensland's coast from the Gold Coast to Hervey Bay, and Ningaloo in Western Australia, are where guided whale swims run. Sunreef in Mooloolaba launched swims in July 2014 and Hervey Bay's began the same year. On the Gold Coast, Cooly Eco Adventures runs a 4-hour swim from Chinderah. Ningaloo's in-water humpback trial began in 2016, with tours from about July in Coral Bay and August in Exmouth to late October. Hervey Bay's water, sheltered by K'gari, is usually calmer than the open coast. Where to swim with whales in Australia
Yes, with a licensed operator on the Ningaloo Coast, which is the only place in Western Australia where in-water humpback tours are allowed. The licences went to established whale shark operators. Coral Bay's season has opened on 1 July and Exmouth's on 1 August, both running to late October, though the dates move with the migration. It is on the far side of the continent from the Gold Coast, so it is a trip of its own. Australia's whale swims compared
Humpbacks are often curious and sometimes approach boats and swimmers, but they are wild animals, and friendly is the wrong frame. A 2021 study in Frontiers in Marine Science found that humpback behaviour in Hervey Bay changed in response to swim-with-whale tours, and its authors called for education, enforcement and monitoring. Good operators wait for a relaxed whale and leave if it moves off. Cooly's listing says you can get as close as 30 metres, but the rest is up to the whales. Swimming with whales responsibly
Yes: Cooly Eco Adventures asks every swimmer to swim unassisted and to have snorkelled before. Its own booking page sets the bar at a 50-metre unassisted swim and a minimum age of 15, with under-18s accompanied by a parent or guardian. You float at the surface in a wetsuit with mask, snorkel and fins, often in open-ocean swell, so comfort in deep water matters more than speed. If that sounds like too much, a whale-watching cruise shows you the same animals from the deck. Who can go, and what to bring
It depends on the listing, so read the one you book. Cooly Eco Adventures says it guarantees whale sightings on the swim but cannot guarantee the swim itself, and its whale watch promises a sighting or a free return. Kokomo Cruises issues a free return ticket if there are no whales, Blue Seafaris offers a free later tour, and Sea World Whale Watch gives a free return cruise voucher rather than a refund. Every Gold Coast listing here allows free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. Compare the terms side by side
For a confident swimmer who accepts that the whale may not stay, most reviewers say yes. Cooly's swim is rated 4.8 from 14 reviews; one October 2025 reviewer wrote that the crew took the time to find whales, the group got in about five times, and some swimmers saw them underwater. The cost is the price, about four times a whale-watching cruise, and the chance of a day spent watching from the boat. If seeing whales is the goal rather than being in the water, Kokomo's 2.5-hour cruise is rated 4.9 from 170 reviews. Swim or whale watching?
