The Best Time to Swim With Whales on the Gold Coast

Humpbacks pass the Gold Coast from late May to November: northbound peaks in July and August, mothers and calves from September. When the swim actually runs.

Updated October 2026

The humpbacks are off the Gold Coast from about late May to November, and the best month depends on what you want to see. July and August bring the most whales, heading north to breed. From September they come back south, and mothers with young calves rest in the calmer water near the coast, often the most relaxed whales of the year. For a swim, a calm, curious whale matters more than a busy sea, and calm sea days matter most of all.

The season runs from about late May to November, in two directions.

The season, month by month

May. The first humpbacks arrive late in the month, heading north. Sea World Whale Watch says it begins sailing in late May, and when we checked in October 2026 Kokomo Cruises’ first 2027 date was 29 May.

June. The northbound run builds. Cooly Eco Adventures’ swim and whale watch both reopen in early June: the swim’s first 2027 date was 5 June and the watch’s 1 June. Some mothers with the previous year’s calves pass early.

July and August. The peak of the northbound migration and the busiest water. This is the surest time to find whales, adult males among them. It is also winter, with the sea at about 19 to 22°C, so a wetsuit is not optional.

September and October. The southbound migration, with newborn calves. Mothers use the sheltered Gold Coast water to rest on the way south, and October is the month most associated with calves showing at the surface. The water starts to warm.

November. The tail of the season. Sea World Whale Watch says it sails until early November, while its combination ticket with Sea World entry says late May to the end of October. Check the listing you want.

Are the whales on the Gold Coast yet?

If it is between late May and November, yes. Outside those months the humpbacks are feeding in Antarctic waters or have not yet arrived from them. The fastest live check is the booking calendars themselves. On 21 October 2026, Sea World Whale Watch and Blue Seafaris still had whale cruises that week, while Kokomo Cruises and both Cooly Eco Adventures trips showed nothing before late May or June 2027. A cruise that is still running is the sign the season has not ended.

Why the swim’s calendar is shorter

Cooly’s swim needs more than whales. It needs a calm sea to put people in the water safely, a whale relaxed enough to stay, and a small group, at most 10 swimmers with the guide by Cooly’s own count. That makes each date scarce in a way a 100-seat cruise is not. Book as early in the season as you can, choose a day with spare days around it, and leave your phone number when you book: Cooly’s booking page says it may contact you about time changes or cancellations.

One more planning detail. The listing gives times in Queensland time. Chinderah is in New South Wales, which moves its clocks forward in October while Queensland does not, so from then until the season ends a phone set to local time shows an hour more than the tour time.

How many whales pass

Operators quote anywhere from 30,000 to 45,000 humpbacks a season. The population has recovered strongly since whaling ended, and a preliminary report to the federal government estimated more than 50,000 eastern Australian humpbacks in 2024, a figure that has not yet been peer reviewed. Whatever the exact number, the Gold Coast sits on the route they all take.
