Swim With Whales or Go Whale Watching on the Gold Coast?

The Gold Coast swim against four whale-watching boats: who each suits, where they leave from, and what each promises if the whales don't show.

Updated October 2026

If you are a confident swimmer and being in the water with a humpback is the point, book the swim: it is the only one on the Gold Coast’s GetYourGuide shelf, and nothing else gets you closer. If you want to see whales, with less money, less effort and better odds of a good look, a whale-watching cruise is the better buy. Four boats work this stretch of coast, and they differ more than their prices suggest.

The swim

Cooly Eco Adventures’ swim leaves Chinderah on the Tweed River for 4 hours, with a skipper, crew and an in-water guide. It is from US$313 per person and rated 4.8 from 14 reviews. You need to swim unassisted, have snorkelled before and be at least 15. Cooly says it guarantees a sighting but not the swim, because the whale decides whether to stay. A swim day can end with whales seen only from the boat, and the price is the same.

The four whale-watching boats

Kokomo Cruises, Main Beach. 2.5 hours, from US$69, rated 4.9 from 170 reviews, the highest of any Gold Coast whale cruise here with more than a handful of reviews. Kokomo says the migration route is about 20 minutes from its marina, and its reviewers keep mentioning how low the boat sits and how close to the water that feels. A free return ticket if no whales are seen. Not suitable during pregnancy or for people over 70.

Sea World Whale Watch, Main Beach. Up to 2.5 hours, from US$62, rated 4.6 from 680 reviews, the most reviewed and the cheapest. The boats are large and purpose-built, with underwater microphones so you can hear whale song, a live underwater video feed when available, a bar on board and a photographer. A 100% whale sighting guarantee, and it is wheelchair accessible. Reviews warn about seasickness on rough days.

Blue Seafaris, Tweed Heads. 2.5 hours, from US$87, rated 4.8 from 51 reviews. A fast rigid inflatable with seats for 21, a marine biologist on board and a hydrophone. A free later tour if no whales are sighted. Not for children under 5, people with back problems or anyone prone to seasickness.

Cooly Eco Adventures’ whale watch, Chinderah. 2.5 hours, from US$104, rated 5.0 from 5 reviews. The same low safari-style boat as the swim, at most 12 passengers, with a sighting guarantee or a free return. Not for children under 6.

Watching from land

You can see whales from the shore for free. Blows and breaches are visible from the coast’s headlands on a clear day, and a pair of binoculars helps a lot. It is a long-range view, though, and nothing like being level with a whale from a boat or in the water. It is a good way to check whether whales are passing close in before you book.

Two more combinations

Sea World Whale Watch also sells its cruise with a day’s entry to Sea World Marine Park, usable on the day of the cruise or the day after, from US$139 and rated 3.7 from 7 reviews; one reviewer could not work out how to exchange the park ticket, which you collect at cruise check-in. Jet Ski Safaris pairs two seats on a 2.5-hour whale cruise with one shared jet ski for a 15 km safari along South Stradbroke Island, from US$188 for two, with no licence needed.
